Are you a little bit spiritual? Perhaps you love to learn about other cultures and beliefs? Regardless, Japan is the place for you. This is a deeply spiritual country with Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines seemingly around every corner. You’ll find them in the most unlikely places, amidst the concrete jungle and residential pockets of Tokyo. Even the most remote villages have a shrine or temple to worship at. Because of this abundance, the total number of sites across the nation is unknown. However, it’s estimated that Kyoto, Japan’s ancient capital for over a thousand years, has over 2,000 worship sites. If you’re not sure where to begin, start with one of the designated Important Cultural Properties of Japan. Read on for the lowdown on some of our favourite historical places in Japan.
